Weekend Wrap: Tampa Showcase

Wesley Chapel, FL - The Tampa Bay Juniors hosted the Tampa Showcase this past week at their home rink AdventHealth Center Ice with 34 teams from the USPHL competing, including 14 Elite teams and 20 Premier teams.  The Premier division was a true North vs South as The Florida and Southeast Divisions took on teams from Midwest West and East Divisions along with teams from the Great Lakes and Atlantic Divisions.  Once again the south came out on top going 22-14 vs their northern counterparts.

TBJ Premier did their part going 3-1 in the showcase knocking off the number 2 team in the league Metro Jets.  TBJ Elite also would go 3-1 over the week.

TBJ Premier

The premier team opened the showcase facing the team that knocked them out of nationals last season, the Wilke-Barre Knights.  This time Tampa would get the best of them with a 2-0 win.  Savva Serdiuk made 35 saves for the shutout with Tyler Cullen and Lucas Ollette providing the scoring.

Game two saw TBJ Premier lose to a tough Toledo team 4-0 despite outshooting Toledo 33-29.  In Game 3 Tampa would face the number two team in the league, the Metro Jets.  In a back and forth affair TBJ would pull off the win 4-3 with Ty Patefield scoring the only goal in the shootout with a beautiful move.  Patefield also scored the tying goal in the third period to send the game into overtime.  Livio Azevedo and Grant Parshall would score in the first and second period and Serdiuk stopped all three shootout attempts for the win.

TBJ would close out the showcase facing Midwest West power the Minnesota Squatch.  Once again Tampa would pull out the Win 4-3 but this time finish it with a Parshall goal in overtime.  Gustav Pettersson, Parshall and Patefield would score in regulation and Serdiuk picked up his 3rd win of the showcase with 36 saves.

TBJ Elite

The Elite team would also go 3-1 facing a mix of northern teams and teams from the Southeast Division.  In game one TBJ Elite faced Wilkes -Barre pulling out a 3-2 shootout win with Mookie Killen and Max Ratliff scoring in the shootout.  Dylan Hineman and Derek Aroyan both scored in regulation.  Shane Passaro stopped 3 of 4 shootout attempts along with 28 saves for the win.

Game 2 Tampa faced Columbia winning 4-1 and outshooting the Infantry 32-18.  Jan Zeman scored 2 goals with Keegan Thurber and Aroyan each scoring in the 3rd to finish Columbia off. Markus Benz made 17 saves for the win.

Game 3 TBJ would play the #1 team in Elite, Carolina Jr Hurricanes.  Carolina would jump out quick on Tampa 3-0 before Killen and Hineman would score to bring TBJ close but The Hurricanes would pull away in the third to win 7-3.  Connor Ferris scored late for Tampa’s 3rd goal.

TBJ Elite would close out the showcase coming away with a resounding 6-2 win over Midwest Division leaders Metro Jets.  Thurber, Kevin Rosello and Daniel Petukhov would give Tampa a three goal lead before Metro scored.  Ratliff, Jacob Munkwitz and Andrew Wagenhauser rounded out the scoring.  Munkwitz would also add 3 assist for a 4 point game.  Passaro made 26 saves for the victory.

Next Up

Sunday both the Elite and Premier teams return to divisional games heading  to Fort Myers to face the Florida Eels at the Skatium.  TBJ Elite plays at 11:00 am and TBJ Premier 1:30 pm.  Both teams return home Friday January 19th also facing the Eels.
