TBJ Premier Playoff Preview: TBJ Takes on Colonials in Florida Division Playoffs

The Tampa Bay Juniors Premier team kicks off their postseason journey with a best-of-3 series against the three-seeded Charleston Colonials. All three games will take place at the Fort Myers Skatium, starting on Saturday at 3 pm. The winner of the series will punch a ticket to nationals. The USPHL Championships will be hosted at Chilled Ponds Ice Sports Complex in Chesapeake, VA, home of the Hampton Roads Whalers.

Scouting the Juniors

The Tampa Bay Juniors finished the regular season 29-13-2. Tampa fell just short in the Florida division, finishing two points behind the Florida Eels. TBJ finished the regular season on a three-game losing skid. They were propelled all season by a well-balanced offense paced by Aaron Frenkel and Stanley Lucas. Both players finished the year with 59 points. Frenkel led the team with 26 goals. Eight separate Juniors finished the regular season with at least 25 points. Tampa Bay was supported by strong goaltending play from Cade Kujawski. Cade finished with an 18-10-2 record, a 2.85 goals against average, and a .905 save percentage.

Scouting the Colonials

The Charleston Colonials clinched the third seed of the Florida Division with a record of 24-19-2. Charleston played a hybrid schedule consisting of games against the Florida and Southeast Division. They won 7 of 8 games from January 29th to February 21st, including multiple wins against the Richmond Generals and Charlotte Rush. Aaron Hamel led the way this season with a team-high 48 points (23 goals, 25 assists). Brendan Dicker was the other point-per-game player on the roster. His 13 goals and 25 assists was good for second on the team. Charleston utilized a stout goaltending tandem of Trevor Giwerowski and Blake Mons. Both netminders amassed a .921 save percentage. Giwerowski finished with a team-high 10 wins and a 2.99 goals against average.

Season Series

The Tampa Bay Juniors won 4 of 5 meetings this season with the Charleston Colonials. The lone win for Charleston came at AdventHealth Center Ice on September 25th. Goaltender Blake Mons stopped 42 of 43 shots. The Juniors won all three meetings in South Carolina, including a weekend sweep on October 17th and 18th. Tampa is averaging 4.8 goals per game against the Colonials.
