Weekend Wrap: TBJ Premier Sweeps, Wins Season Series Against Atlanta

After being swept by Atlanta in November, the Tampa Bay Juniors Premier team enacted their revenge by winning all 3 games against the Mad Hatters last weekend.

Friday: TBJ 6, Atlanta 1

The Juniors Premier team started their weekend series with an emphatic 6-1 win against the Atlanta Mad Hatters. TBJ wasted no time establishing themselves in the first period. Tampa scored two goals in 11 seconds to open the scoring. Aaron Frenkel scored at 9:04 into the first, followed by Parker Chadwell’s first goal of the season. Tampa put the exclamation point on the first period with a goal from Paul Flidr at 16:34.

The Juniors built on their 3-0 lead in the second. Aaron Frenkel scored his second of the game and 24th of the season at 13:35. They continued to pour it on with goals from Colton Sipperley at 16:39 and Connor Reed at 18:42. Cade Kujawski’s shutout bid was spoiled with a consolation Atlanta goal with 1:38 left in the third period. The offensive explosion in the first and second helped Tampa cruise to an important series-opening win. Cade Kujawski made 25 saves for his 17th win of the season.

 

Saturday: TBJ 7, Atlanta 6 (OT)

The Tampa Bay Juniors Premier team prevailed in a 13-goal thriller against the Atlanta Mad Hatters at AdventHealth Center Ice. Atlanta came out with authority in the first, scoring at 13:12 and 17:23 to take a 2-0 lead. Colton Sipperley got a goal back with 35 seconds left in the period to cut the deficit in half. The Juniors evened the score at two 4:21 into the second thanks to a power play goal from Jack Anderson. Truett Olson gave TBJ their first lead of the game with a goal at 11:38. Atlanta was able to even the game at three with 1:51 left in the middle period.

The Juniors and Mad Hatters continued to go back-and-forth in the third. Atlanta commanded the beginning of the period with goals at 1:58 and 4:22. Aaron Frenkel got an important goal back for Tampa at 5:57. The two-goal lead was quickly reestablished for Atlanta, scoring 27 seconds after Frenkel’s goal. Derek Walker continued the goal fest with a goal at 7:29 to make the score 6-5. With 40 seconds left in regulation, Atlanta committed a cross-checking penalty. During the 6-on-4 advantage, Stanley Lucas heroically kept the game alive. He scored his 20th goal of the season with five seconds left to force overtime. After the dramatic goal, Tampa carried their momentum into overtime. Colton Sipperley sealed the deal just 26 seconds into the extra period. Lane Skon made 32 saves in the win.

 

Sunday: TBJ 5, Atlanta 4 (SO)

In their ninth meeting with the Atlanta Mad Hatters, the Tampa Bay Juniors came out victorious in another exciting matchup. Both teams scored a goal in the opening 20 minutes. Stanley Lucas broke the ice 9:42 into the game. Atlanta knotted the game up at one with 1:51 left in the period. Neither team could establish dominance in the second. Atlanta took their first lead with a goal 1:28 into the period. Aaron Frenkel’s 26th goal of the year tied the game up again. Keegan Johnson followed up at 12:16 to give Tampa the lead back. Atlanta evened the game up once more, scoring at 15:07 of the second.

Atlanta stole the lead again 4:13 into the third period. Colton Sipperley got TBJ back into it at 8:21 with his 4th goal of the weekend. The Juniors and Mad Hatters were unable to find a winner in regulation for the second straight game. Unlike Saturday, the extra period was not successful in deciding a victor. In the second round of the shootout, Stanley Lucas scored the one and only goal that was needed. Cade Kujawski made 38 saves and stopped all three Mad Hatters attempts in the shootout. The victory secured a win in the season series against Atlanta. The perfect weekend for TBJ kept them in first place by a four-point margin over the Florida Eels.
