Weekend Wrap: Elite sweeps, Premier splits vs Charleston

Friday

Elite: TBJ 7, Charleston 2

The Tampa Juniors Elite team scored 7 goals for the third game in a row as they defeated the Charleston Colonials, 7-2. The Juniors took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission thanks to two short-handed goals from Jake Duhaime and Tim Ruf. TBJ opened the game up early in the second period. Tim Ruf, Bryson Uhrig, and two goals from Ryan Bahula helped the Elite team grow their lead to 6-0 just 5 minutes into the second.

Charleston got a consolation goal halfway through the second period. The Juniors were able to regain their 6-goal advantage thanks to Adam Custable’s first goal of the season at 8:06 of the third. Charleston again got a goal back at 12:36 of the third. Evan Spinella stopped 25 of 27 shots to earn his second win of the season. Ryan Bahula (2 G, 1 A), Tim Ruf (2 G), Adam Custable (1 G, 2 A), and Nash Cobbs (2 A) all finished with multi-point games.

Premier: Charleston 3, TBJ 1

The Tampa Bay Juniors Premier team lost their first game of the season by a score of 3-1 to Charleston.  Colonial’s netminder Blake Mons made 42 fantastic saves to keep the Juniors’ high-flying offense grounded. Charleston opened the scoring 9:22 into the first with a power play goal by Ryan Bystrom. The Colonials tallied another power play goal at 10:31 of the second to grow the lead to 2.

TBJ’s newly reunited top line trimmed the lead in half on the power play at 14:16 of the second. Connor Reed scored his second of the year with assists from Stanley Lucas and Aaron Frenkel. Charleston scored an insurance goal at 16:27 to regrow the lead. The Colonials were able to see out a scoreless third period on their way to a 3-1 win. Lane Skon stopped 18 of 21 shots in his TBJ debut.

Saturday

Elite: TBJ 8, Charleston 1

The Elite team pulled off their second sweep in a row with an 8-1 win against Charleston. The two teams played a scoreless first before Tampa got the offense rolling in the 2nd. Tim Ruf scored just 19 seconds into the middle period. The Juniors also got goals from Jake Duhaime, Jack Fleer, and Adam Custable to take a 4-0 lead into the second intermission.

TBJ scored an additional four goals in the third en route to a 7-goal victory. Justin Walker and James scored and Ryan Bahula scored his 7th and 8th goals of the season in the third period. The lone goal for Charleston was scored at 16:49 by Kirill Shpak. The one Colonials’ goal denied Ethan Leigh of his first TBJ shutout. The netminder picked up his second win, stopping 28 of 29 Charleston shots. Jack Fleer (1 G, 3A), Ryan Bahula (2 G, 1 A), Adam Custable (1 G, 2 A), Jake Duhaime (1 G, 2 A), Martin Raynov (2 A), and Tyler Cullen (2 A) all finished with multi-point games.

​Premier: TBJ 6, Charleston 3

The Juniors Premier Team got back on track with a 6-3 win over Charleston. Aaron Frenkel scored 9:02 into the first period and the Juniors did not look back. Stanley Lucas scored his 4th goal of the season 2:12 into the second to make it a 2-0 game. Charleston cut the lead in half just a minute and 14 seconds later.

Lucas scored another goal at 7:12 of the second. Jack Anderson gave the Juniors a 3-goal lead at 16:47 of the period thanks to a beautiful assist from Colin Farley.

Aaron Frenkel scored, his second of the game and fourth of the season, 37 seconds into third to grow the lead to 4. Charleston got a goal back at 7:05 but Keegan Johnson put the game out of reach at 14:47.

Charleston scored a consolation goal at 15:15 of the third to make it 6-3. Cade Kujawski improved to 3-0-

0, making 31 impressive saves. Aaron Frenkel and Stanley Lucas both finished with 2 goals and 2 assists.
